Bako National Park is not only the oldest, but with a size of 27km² it is also the smallest national park of the state of Sarawak on Malaysian Borneo. There are no less than 7 different ecosystems and you can also spot a monkey that you can only find on Borneo: the proboscis monkey! Also called the long-nosed monkey or Dutch Monkey. Bako National Park is also one of the best places to see these beautiful animals. The park, located north of Kuching, can only be reached by boat and has 16 hiking trails via which you can discover this beautiful nature park and its wildlife.
Will you soon be traveling to Kuching? Then be sure to go to Bako National Park for one or more days. Here, find all the information you need for your visit.
Where is the Bako National Park?
Bako National Park can be found in Malaysia and is located in the west of Borneo in the state of Sarawak, 20 km north of Kuching.
The best time to visit
The best travel time for a visit to the Bako National Park is between March and October.
Between November and February it is rainy season and you have a chance of more rain and a rough sea. In this period it can happen that the boats do not run to the park or can not moor at the pier at the headquarters.
It is also advisable to find a somewhat dry day for your visit. This so that you can not only walk safely, without slipping, but that you also have a much smaller chance of encountering leeches.
Hiking trails Bako National Park
At Bako NP there is a total of 16 walks, which you can undertake yourself or under the guidance of a guide. The walks are clearly marked and vary from easy to hard and from short walks of just a few hundred meters to day walks of several kilometers.
After your arrival at the Bako National Park, first go by the headquarters. Here they can advise you well about which hiking trails are open, which walks you can undertake that day and suits you best. The humidity in the park is very high and therefore even walking a few kilometers can be difficult. Below you will find a map of Bako National Park and a description of the walks:
After a short and steep climb (30 minutes) through cliff vegetation you have a beautiful view of Telok Assam, the South China Sea and Santubong. This hiking trail leads to the habitat of the special long-nosed monkeys and therefore it is one of the best walks for spotting the proboscis monkey. As soon as you hear noises, stop for a moment, be as quiet as possible and search the trees to see if you can spot the monkeys. Through a cliff forest you walk to a small secluded beach. It is also a hiking trail where the proboscis monkeys are regularly seen in the early morning or late afternoon. If you hear strange sounds, stop for a moment and be as quiet as possible. Who knows, maybe you spot a long-nosed monkey among the trees! The first part you pass along swamps and you walk over a flat area where sometimes you can see the long-nosed monkey. As soon as you arrive at the sign 'Beware of the Bess', the path goes up steeply. Here you will sometimes have to hold on to the roots of the trees to keep your balance. But once you get to the top, your climb will be rewarded and you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Bako coastline. During your walk along the Telok Pandan Kecil you can decide to make a detour to the Telok Pandan Besar. From the Telok Pandan Kecil it is only a 5-10 minute walk to the cliff at the end of the hiking trail. From here you have a nice view over the bay and you can rest on the benches. The Telok Pandan Kecil is one of the most beautiful walks in Bako National Park. After you have been dropped off on the beach by the captain of the boat you start the walk with a climb of about 10 minutes. First via stairs and then via a steep slope full of tree trunks. If you start from the headquarters, be careful during your descent here! Once your are up you have a great view from the cliff over the beach where you have just been dropped off. From here you walk through the forest and via a sandy path to the headquarters. On the way you can also bring a visit to the viewpoint at the end of Telok Pandan Besar. If you still have time, you can also choose to extend your walk and to discover one of the other longer hiking trails. The Tajor path takes you through bushes, padang vegetation and after a last steep climb you will reach a small beach. Do you want to take a break on the way and swim in a jungle setting? Then stop along the way at the small Tajor waterfall. The waterfall is about 2.5 hours walk from the headquarters and is at its best after heavy rainfall. During the walk there is little or no possibility to protect yourself from the sun, so it is certainly advisable to put on sunscreen and to bring a hat. During this walk to the border of the park you will pass along the largest trees of the rainforest. Due to its remote location this path is not used very often. You can combine the Tanjung Rhu with the Tajor route. From the junction it is a 45 minutes walk (one way) and via a stretch of open land you walk to Rhu, a rocky peninsula, and a small peninsula where you can see various platforms and rock pools. From the junction with the Lintang route the Ulu Serait takes you to the base of Bukit Gondol in about 1.5 hours. The path lies a bit deeper in the park and goes through scrub, padang vegetation and swamp forest. The Lintang walking path is the only walk in the park where you make a loop and is one of the most popular walks. Along the way you will pass almost all vegetation types that can be found in the park and the stretch between Ulu Assam and Serait is one of the best places to spot the long-nosed monkey. Do you still have energy left? Then you can decide to make a small detour to the Bukit Tambi viewpoint. The Telok Sibur is a day trip and takes you from the headquarters to the longest beach in Bako in about 3.5 hours. You first walk to the waterfall via the Tajor and then from here you follow the path for 45 minutes, until you reach a junction. Here, the Sibur path starts. After another 45 minutes long and steep descent, a walk through the mangrove and crossing a river you finally arrive at the longest beach in Bako. Bukit Keruing connects Bukit Gondol with the Tajor path. You do not only walk past the largest trees in the park, but also along the slopes of Bukit Keruing, the second highest point in Bako. The part from Paya Jelutong till the Tajor waterfall will take about 30 minutes. If you do not want to climb Bukit Gondol, then this path is the shortcut. It is a very short path, where you can see a freshwater swamp forest. This is where the Jelutong, the most dominant species in the area grows and from which the softwood is used to make pencils. This walk is the longest in Bako National Park and takes you from the headquarters to the small beach of Telok Limau in 6 to 7 hours. You will pass along rainforest, scrub and swamp forest, you will cross small streams and climb some hills from where you will have a beautiful view of the whole peninsula of Muara Tebas. It is possible to camp at Telok Limau and to walk back the next day. Or you can choose to have yourself picked up by boat. The Telok Kruin path is the furthest away from the headquarters and is therefore rarely used. If you walk the Telok Limau path, you can add the Telok Kruin path to your hike. From Telok Limau you first climb 15-20 minutes through the forest and then you still have to walk 25 minutes further before you arrive at the Telok Kruin path. After the junction you make a descent to an area with bushes and you have the chance to see carnivorous cup plants on the way. You have four short paths which lead to a small rock pool and the viewpoints of Bukit Kruin, Muara Tebas, Tanjung Keruin and Tanjung Po. Please be careful: the last part of the path is a very steep descent to a mangrove forest! After this you follow the path through the mangroves to the deserted beach, one of the best in Bako National Park.
Depending on the walk you want to do, you can then choose:
- to start from the headquarters and to have yourself picked-up by a boat at the end of a walk on one of the beaches.
- to go to one of the beaches by boat and to walk back to the headquarters from there. This option is definitely recommended if you do not want to take a look on your watch the entire time!
We had chosen to take the boat to the most beautiful beach of Bako National Park, Teluk Pandan Kecil and walked back to the headquarters from there. This way we were assured that we would return on time and we were no longer dependent on the boat and a specific pick-up time because of low-tide. After we were back at the headquarters we still had some time left and before we sailed back to Bako Bazaar we could still do a few short walks around the headquarters.
Before you start hiking, it is obligatory to report to the headquarters which hike(s) you are going to do, with how many people and at what time you leave. And as soon as you reach the headquarters please do not forgot to unsubscribe yourself. This so that the staff is not going to search for you, while this is not necessary.
Most popular hiking trails Bako National Park
Especially when you only visit the park for a day, you will have to make choices in the walk(s) you want to undertake. Good choices are:
Teluk Pandan Kecil
in combination with Telok Pandan Besar
The most popular walk(s) among visitors. Have yourself dropped off at the Pandan Kecil beach and walk back to the headquarters. When you plan it like this, you do not have to take a look on your watch the entire time to get the boat in time and you also do not need to descend the steep slope during the last part of the walk. The only thing is that you have to climb a little bit after your arrival on the beach.
Teluk Delima and Teluk Paku
For the biggest chance of spotting the proboscis.
Night walk
If you stay overnight in the Bako N.P., you can consider to make a night walk (evening walk). As soon as the sun has set, the rainforest comes to life and together with a guide you are going to look out for various nocturnal animals such as spiders, fireflies, frogs and cicadas. Do not forget to bring a flashlight and / or a headlamp!
You can easily book the evening walk at the headquarters.
MYR 10 / € 2 per person.
Daily at 20.00h (08.00pm). Duration: 1,5-2 hours.
Wildlife Bako National Park
At Bako National Park you will not only find beautiful nature, but also a lot of wildlife. The most special inhabitant is the proboscis monkey, also called the long-nosed monkey. We were lucky and saw a long-nosed monkey hiding in the trees immediately upon our arrival in the park. Bako National Park is also one of the best places to see these beautiful monkeys and therefore one of the reasons for many travelers to visit the park.
The biggest chance of spotting the long-nosed monkeys is in the (early) morning or in the late afternoon at the pier, the headquarters, in the trees along the beach of Teluk Assam or on the hiking trails Telok Delima and Telok Paku.
Around the accommodations in the park and at the pier you can also encounter various monkeys such as the Silver Leaf Monkey. And be warned, because they are always looking for food! Especially your backpack, most likely filled with snacks, is certainly very interesting. So pay attention to your stuff!
If you are lucky you might also see the Wagglers Pit Viper. This snake has a beautiful green color, but is the most toxic of the island. Upon our arrival, a guide present had already spotted the snake in a tree and told us that the snake reacts to body temperature. So it is not advisable to view the snake from too close. Even though the guide dared to take a few photos from close by with a mobile phone from other travelers with danger to his own life. Fortunately they also invented the zoom lens! In any case, that seemed to be a slightly safer option to me.
Neither is anyone a fan of leeches and you would rather not come across them. However, if you visit the park on a rainy day or after it has rained a lot, you will unfortunately come across them. Prepare yourself for this by wearing closed shoes, high socks, long trousers and / or special socks against leeches!
Bako N.P.: day trip versus an overnight stay
You can visit the park in 1 or more days and depends on what you want to see and do. If you are in the park on time, the most popular walks can definitely be done in 1 day and you can take the boat back to Bako Bazaar at 16.00h (04.00pm). From Kuching there are also various tours offered to Bako National Park. These tours are not only expensive, but also only offer little added value, because it is really easy to visit the park on your own.
Try to be at the Bako Bazaar as early as possible, so that you can catch the boat on time and visit the park at your leisure. Especially if you only have 1 day for your visit.
If you have the time and want to see more of the park, then I recommend you to stay at least one night in the park. So you have more time to discover the park and if you want you can also do the night walk. Keep in mind that accommodation is very basic and there is not much to do in the evening hours.

Boat to Bako National Park
The Bako National Park can only be reached by boat. After your arrival at the Bako Bazaar you first need to go to the counter to pay your entrance fee and to book your boat, which will take you to the Park Headquarters (HQ) of the park.
Bako Bazaar – headquarters:
May-September, the boats usually depart from the pier every hour between 08.00h (08.00am) and 16.00h (04.00pm).
Headquarters- Bako Bazaar:
Depending on low- and high tide the boats go back between 15.00h (03.00pm) and 16.00h (04.00pm).
Ask for the sailing schedule for the day of your visit at the desk!
Please note that in case of low tide or during the rainy season, between November and February, it may happen that the boats do not run or leave later.
The boats sail out as soon as they are full (4-6 people) and the water level is high enough for the boats to sail. For example, despite being around Baku Bazaar around 9 am, we almost had to wait until 11.00-12.00h due to the low tide and because the boat was not full. So because of this we would only have a limited time in the park and we were almost forced to cancel our visit to Bako National Park. At the end, luckily the crew decided that we could still go! Although we had a bit less time in the park than we had planned, because of the slightly later departure.
TIP: Let your accommodation contact the Bako National Park one day before your visit for more information about the tides and what is the best time for you to catch the boat.
The boat trip from Bako Bazaar takes about 20 minutes and goes over the Santubong river and the South China sea. On the way to the park you can enjoy a beautiful view of the rugged coastline, deserted beaches, the jungle and you will see some locals busy with their fishing boats and fishing nets. As soon as you arrive at the headquarters, you will also sail along one of the most famous rock formations of Bako National Park (on the right): a rock that looks like the head of a cobra.
Once you arrive at the headquarters and it is low tide, it is not possible for the boats to (temporarily) moor at the pier in Bako National Park. Depending on the water level, the skipper will:
- moor the boat along the pier, or;
- drop you at the beach, after which you need to walk through the water for a few meters. Therefore, wear flip-flops or sandals and only start wearing your walking shoes / sports shoes once you have arrived at the park.
At the headquarters you need to settle the time to sail back to the Bako Bazaar and this time will also depend on the times of low- and high tide. The departure time is between 15.00h and 16.00h.
Costs boat Bako Bazaar – Bako National Park: MYR 20 / € 4.20 per person return.
Boat within Bako National Park
When you go for a walk which starts or ends at the beach, you also have to arrange transport by boat. You can do this very easily once you arrive at the headquarters of Bako National Park. The prices vary and depend on:
- your destination;
- the number of persons per boat;
- a one way or a return;
Below you can find the price list, which can also be found at Bako Bazaar:
If you start walking from the headquarters and get picked up at the beach, then do not forgot to arrange a pick-up time with the skipper. If you are not on time, you have the chance that the skipper will go back and you have to wait for another boat.
Guide
Bako National Park can be visited on your own easily. But if you do not like to explore the nature park on your own or want to know more about the park, nature and wildlife along the way, a guide to Bako National Park is definitely recommended.
You must arrange a guide at Bako Bazaar before you get onto the boat. The costs for a guide are per group:
- about MYR 35 / € 7.50 for one hour;
- between MYR 80-120 / € 16.50-25 for one day.
If you want to save costs, you can choose to form a group and share the costs for a guide. Check in advance how many people the guide can or may take with him. And consult with your traveling party what you want to do or see in Bako National Park, so that you can discuss your plan with the guide.
Food and beverages
At the headquarters in the Bako National Park you will find a cafeteria where you can go three times a day for a simple meal, a few snacks and drinks. The meals are usually in the form of a buffet and where you pay for how much you put onto your plate. There are no possibilities to prepare food yourself, so it is advisable to bring your own food and drinks.
Swimming
With a high humidity and the burning sun you probably would like to take a refreshing dip at one of the beaches in Bako National Park. However, it is advisable to check with the headquarters first whether this is already possible again and if yes, where. This because sometimes crocodiles are spotted and you certainly do not want to meet on of these if you just started to take your refreshing dive.
Swimming safely is possible at the Tajor waterfall. But then it must have rained a lot and to reach the waterfall you first have to walk for about 2.5 hours from the headquarters.

nov 7, 2018Thank you for this amazing guide to Bako! Our group found it super useful, the details were spot on. We saw a huge family of proboscis monkeys swinging in the trees on the Pandan Kecia to HQ trail.
